This article discusses strategies for avoiding natural calamities and reducing their impacts, focusing on hazard concepts, risk assessment, and GIS-based approaches. It outlines Maps of Hazard, risk factors, and a three-section framework (physical-geographical analysis, diagnosis of hazard conditions, and strategy and measures) for prevention and mitigation of earthquakes, floods, and slides in Romania, and describes the role of GIS, data bases, and institutional cooperation in disaster management.
